New Project Demon Hunter book!! Reviewof Unmarked Graves
I’m a long-time fan of USA Today bestselling writer Christine Pope, and the Project Demon Hunters series is probably my favorite. (While I love paranormal romance, I really love urban fantasy, and these books hit my reading sweet spot. (They are a little darker, a little scarier, and a little edgier. Unmarked Graves is probably my favorite book of the series so far.
The pace is fast…and the story opens just moments after the last book ended with Will and Rosemary’s ill-fated encounter with the demon Caleb Lockwood. Will doesn’t know where he stands with Rosemary, the police are skeptical of the story they’re both telling, and worst of all, that missing Demon Hunters footage is in Caleb’s hands. If he destroys it…
All the characters we’ve met over the last four books are here, plus Rosemary’s mother Glynis, who is exactly the sort of supportive mother you’d expect to have raised her brood of witch daughters. She’s warm and has a sense of humor and I wouldn’t mind if she ended up with a book of her own.
As always in her books, Christine makes the locations come alive with details that let the reader know she has actually lived in the places where she sets her books. In this case, I have lived in some of the same places, and it’s a treat to relate her supernatural doings to the real-life places I’ve been.

Once Upon a Star, a review
Fiddlehead
Press has a whole series of ONCE UPON A … sets of retold fairy tales and this
newest one may be its best. The fourteen fairy tale-inspired science fiction
tales are all fresh and inventive and lots of fun to read, from Sarra Cannon’s
Matrix-meets-Robin Hood spin on the classic tale (“Loxley”) to Christine Pope’s
“The Cyrano Solution,” which is an epic take on “The Princess and the Frog.” The
“inspirations” for the stories run the gamut from a trio of Russian tales to “The
Goose Girl,” and while there’s a Cinderella story, it’s quite unlike the
classic tale. One of the best things about the set is that it doesn't fall back on the same old/same old stories that everyone seems to retell--Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, the Little Mermaid, but bring in a much more diverse set of stories.
The writers all seem to be having a lot of fun, but there are
some lessons to be had here as well—revenge and redemption figure large in
several of the stories.
There’s also
nice world building. Some of the stories, like those by Anthea Sharp and
Christine Pope, take place in between “episodes” of their long-running series,
while others are “one-offs” the writers admit were a genre stretch. Moreover,
while it’s possible to see some of the influences on the stories, the writers
have augmented their ideas with other bits and pieces of lore and myth and
folktale. And so, we have Grimm’s fairy tales coexisting with Pinocchio and
Washington Irving’s Sleepy Hollow. Wrapping a science fiction skin around these
old stories makes them feel as shiny as the titanium hull of a space craft.
If you like
science fiction and fairy tales, this is a boxed set you NEED to get. You can buy it here.

Christine Pope's UNQUIET SPIRITS
Christine Pope, the USA TODAY bestselling author, has just released the first in a new series and it's a bit more urban fantastic than her usual PNR. Unquiet Souls: Project Demon Hunter book one is a great introduction to a new set of characters running around Southern California, a landscape the California native knows well.
The premise is simple--a demon hunter teams up with a psychic for a reality television show that gets just a little too real--but the characters are complex. Both Audrey and Michael harbor secrets underneath the incendiary sexual attraction they have, and the revelation of those secrets leads to a terrific finale that leads right into the next book.
Pope has clearly done her homework when it comes to demonic infestations, hauntings, and things occult, and there are some genuinely creepy moments as the heroine and hero confront the forces of darkness. The pair are a refreshingly non-cliche cople. He's not an alpha-hole and she's no shrinking violet. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series.

Freebies...urban fantasy box set
I love boxed sets. They're a cheap (often free) way to sample new authors in whatever genre I'm currently interested in reading. And I always love Urban Fantasy. I've read Christine Pope's hosen, from her Djinn series, and I'm a fan of Pippa DaCosta, so I'm looking forward to reading Hidden Blade, as well as Stacy Clafin's Lost Wolf. All the selections in this set are full-length novels, and the myths seem to span everything from Norse to Egyptian gods and everything in between. (I'm a sucker for Egyptian mythology.) You can get this boxed set free right now.

New from USA TODAY Best-selling author Cristine Pope
If you're a fan of Christine Pope's "Witches of Cleopatra Hill" series (and who isn't?), you'll want to snap up her new novella, The Arrangement. Set in 19th century Flagstaff, it continues to fill in the backstory of the Wilcox witch clan. It's filled with great period detail and the plot is achingly romantic.

Once Upon a Curse--17 Fairy Tale Retellings
I just bought Once Upon a Curse (it's a boxed set selling for 99 cents on Amazon) that's chock full of fairy tale retellings. The only story I've read before is Christine Pope's "The Queen of Frost and Darkness," a Snow Queen retelling that originally ran in Dark Valentine Magazine.
It's a fantastic collection. Here's the review I just posted on Amazon:
It's a fantastic collection. Here's the review I just posted on Amazon:
Witches and warriors, demons and darkness,
brave women and true love, and a vampiric take on a classic fairy tale—it’s all
here in this boxed set, and more besides. Because many of the stories have
layers to them that remind us of other stories and folk tales and ballads, like
the silver dagger Yarrow carries in the collection’s opening story, “Yarrow
Sturdy and Bright,” by Devon Monk. This is a fierce, feminist take on “The Pied
Piper,” and it sets the tone for the stories that follow.
The stories
run the gamut from reimagined Celtic folklore like Anthea Sharp’s “Fae Horse,”
a wild ride on a NightMare to Christine Pope’s lyrical Russian take on “The
Snow Queen.” C. Gockel’s urban fantastic version of Cinderella features a
wildly sympathetic stepmother, a “stepsister” who’s a 15-year-old gay kid exploring
his own fabulosity, and a whiny “princess” whose diva antics are consistently
amusing.

Another Boxed Set full of Best-Selling Authors
Before my book Bride of the MIdnight King was picked to be in a boxed set (For The Love of the Vampire), I didn't really know that boxed sets were a "thing." I noticed them every once in a while on Book Bub ads, but had no idea they were usually such great deals. They're like sampler chocolate boxes where you can try out a lot of new writers for not a lot of money--usually either free or 99 cents.
In the past month I've seen a lot of boxed sets featuring some of my favorite writers--Christine Pope, Stacy Clafin, Rebecca Hamilton--going by. And here's a boxed set that's just gone up, featuring 29 best-selling authors (some of them INTERNATIONAL best sellers.) Edge is only 99 cents on all platforms including Amazon. You better believe I've already snagged my set!

Beauty and the Beast retold in Christine Pope's Wolf of Harrow Hall
"Beauty and the Beast" is one of the most beloved fairy tales ever told. Right now there are two different film versions being developed. Christophe Gans' gorgeous French language version is available on YouTube. And if you go on GoodReads looking for a retelling of the tale, you're directed to a list with 1006 results, one of them my own novelette The Summer Garden. (There are 2611 retellings of "Cinderella" so that's even more popular as source material.)
Christine Pope likes "Beauty and the Beast." She retold it in her novella Breath of Life, which kickstarted her Gaia Consortium Series. And now she's used the story as a basis for a lush, snow-bound love story called The Wolf of Harrow Hall. Part of her Tales of the Latter Kingdoms series--all stand-alone fairy tales--Wolf has a gorgeous cover by Ravven, and an original new mythos that explains the nature of the beast. Buy it now at Amazon and on other publishing platforms.

Interview with Christine Pope
Best-selling author Christine Pope has new book out in her paranormal romance series "The Sedona Files." I thought this would be a good time to ask her a few questions.
Falling Angels
is the next-to-last book (oh no!) in your “Sedona Files” series. When you wrote
the first, Bad Vibrations, did you know you were going to chronicle the
second generation of your characters?
Frankly, I didn’t even know it was going to be a series. Back
then, I really didn’t know what I was doing, and thought writing standalone
books was the way to go (hint: it isn’t, at least in the vast majority of
cases). But then I began to think how about how I could expand that one book
into a series, and started working out the bigger-picture arc of the alien
conspiracy/invasion that’s always going on in the background (and sometimes the
foreground) of the books. As for the second generation, after I was done
writing Angel Fire, I realized I really wanted to tell Grace’s story
once she was an adult, and it sort of fell into place that I’d create a second
trilogy that takes place approximately twenty-five years after the end of Angel
Fire. So that’s why I wrote books for the daughters of the heroines of the
first trilogy: Grace (Kara from Desert Hearts’ daughter), Callista
(Kirsten from Falling Angels’ daughter), and Taryn, the daughter of
Persephone from Bad Vibrations.
Check out the trailer for The Sedona Files:

You’ve got several established series out
there—the Witches of Cleopatra Hill, the Latter Kingdom books, the Gaian
Consortium stories—but it seems like you’re always coming up with something new
for your readers. What’s next?
The Gaian series has been ended (although there’s a prequel
short story coming out in an anthology in February 2016), and I’ll be wrapping
up the Sedona Files and the Latter Kingdoms books this year as well. I do plan
to write more Witches of Cleopatra Hill books, and more books in my Djinn Wars
series. There are also plans in the works for a post-apocalyptic zombie trilogy
to launch in late 2016. That one will still be romance, just darker and
grittier than some of my other books (and no, the romance is NOT with the
zombies). After that…I’ll have to see. I have concepts for several new
paranormal romance series (and possibly another science fiction romance
series), but none of those would launch until 2017 sometime.
In your PNR, you’ve had witches, ghosts,
demons, and now zombies. Have you ever been tempted to write a vampire or
werewolf story?
Well…in a word, no. I know they’re popular, but I like writing
about paranormal characters that haven’t been used as much. That said, the
newest Latter Kingdoms book (which I’m writing at the moment) does
actually include a version of one of those paranormal characters, but I don’t
want to say much more about it than that.

A Vampire a Day: Blood and Snow by RaShelle Workman
I love re-imagined fairy tales. I love writing them (Bride of the Midnight King, Fashionista) and I love reading them. I'm always pleased when someone comes up with an inventive new twist on an old story, as Christine Pope did with her sci fi Beauty and the Beast novella Blood Will Tell. RaShelle Workman's contemporary paranormal version of Snow White is now a multi-book series that's sold more than a million copies and it's easy to see why. You can get book one free on kindle, and move on from there.
Workman's version of Snow White is a thoroughly contemporary young woman who doesn't own any makeup, is hopelessly out of fashion compared to her fashionista friend, who is prone to bouts of TMI, and generally doesn't think she has much to offer. She's sympathetic, relatable, and likable. And SHE HAS A CHARACTER ARC!!
And the author has worked out a history and a mythos for her vampires. And there are consequences for people's actions.
I liked this book a lot. If you like heroines who have character, and plots that involve real emotion, you will like this series.
Bonus: I really liked the font used for this story. So many ebooks look like they were typed on a typewriter or use some generic font that is just ugly. The font here is very feminine without being overwhelmingly girly/swirly.

Darknight, Book 2 of the Witches of Cleopatra Hill by Christine Pope
Christine Pope’s new novel Darknight (the second in her Witches of
Cleopatra Hill trilogy) takes up one page after Darkangel left off. Angela
McAllister, newly minted prima of the McAllister witch clan is in the hands of
a rival clan, and the only thing she knows for certain is that the consort
she’s bonded with is the brother of her clan’s fiercest enemy.
It’s complicated.
For Angela, biology is destiny and she and Connor Wilcox are
fated to be together despite decades of enmity between the McAllisters and the
Wilcoxes, a feud that has affected every witch clan in Arizona. Connor is
equally eager to let bygones be bygones, and as the yule season approaches, the
bond between him and Angela deepens. But that doesn’t mean that their respective
families are happy about it or ready to play Secret Santa with each other.
The plot thickens in this book and the danger and tension is
ratcheted up several notches as a dire plot unfolds that could destroy the
consort connection. It’s not just
witches that live in Cleopatra Hill and in this book we meet some
shape-shifters and witches too.
As always with Pope’s novels, the setting is just as
important as the characters and if a reader ever visits Jerome, they could do
worse than take the Darknight tour of local eateries (and wineries). With an
engaging cast (both normal and paranormal), Darknight is a satisfying read and
will whet your appetite for the concluding book in the trilogy. (And speaking
of whetting your appetite, I defy you to read some of the chapters without your
mouth watering from Pope’s vivid description.)
Pope has a number of giveaways scheduled for the book's launch. Here's a link to the contest running on GoodReads.
