And the season begins with Xmas Tales

In my USA Today bestselling persona of Katherine Moore, I decided to go all in on the Christmas romances this year. The goal is to publish a Christmas novella every day in December. I've been writing the stories all year and I'm excited to get them out into the world.

One thing I've noticed is that certain themes keep surfacing. One is that I write a lot about family. My parents died young and I miss them. My little sister died young too, and I really  miss her. We were eight years apart in age but close in sisterhood. We spent most Christmases together the last decade of her life.

I also write about heroines and their grandmothers. I was brought up in a three-generation family, with my maternal grandmother living with us for huge swathes of time while my grandfather was in and out of the nearby veterans' hospital. My grandfather was old and rather remote, but my grandmother was very much involved in our lives. And she was a character and a half. I use a bit of her and her various sisters and friends every time I write an older woman. You can purchase it here.

You can also pick up the other stories (all of them bite-sized and available on Kindle Unlimited for your reading enjoyment).

Available December 4, 2023.

A Cozy Christmas Night

Preorder here.

This is one of two divorced couples/second chance love romances on offer this Christmas. The other is Merry Christmas, Darling, which is one of my Silver Birch stories.

You can preorder that here.

Probably one of my favorite stories on preorder is Gifts for Christmas, which is a love story, but it's also about a distressed community coming together and providing a lovely winter holiday for all its citizens. This is a story that was first inspired by the loaves and fishes, but also by the children's book Stone Soup. I first learned about that book becuase it was one of the books featured on Captain Kangaroo. I've remembered it all these years.

Both my grandmothers were award-winning bakers and fine cooks, and during the holidays, they set bountiful tables. I've akways been grateful for that bounty, and as I've gotten older, I have become well aware that too many people are hungry. There are all kinds of giveaways for the holidays, and people are usually generous with their donations to food banks around the season, but people are hungry all year long. I'm lucky in that there's a tiny food pantry near me, so donating is easy. But when I have extra money, I also like to support the work of Jose Andres' World Central Kitchen

The Babbling Brook Naked Poker Club Book One by Ann Warner

I used to facilitate a mystery book club that was primarily composed of women in their late sixties and seventies. And before we got to the book discussion each month, we often got into a discussion of what they'd suffered under the patriarchy. This book is about women in a retirement home who ALL have stories like that, and they all have pasts, sometimes dark pasts.
I loved this book and cannot wait to read the sequels. The characters are women who could be in my friends group. There's the teacher who "took care" of the bully, accidentally paralyzing him but knowing that she saved a lot of other kids pain. There's the woman who hides an original Edward Hopper painting in her room. There's the woman who took up handwriting analysis as a hobby to occupy her retirement.

TThe book is free today on Kindle.

New Urban Fantasy Coming Soon.

It was 1993 when I read my first Urban Fantasy novel and it changed my life. I'd never heard of the the genre before. But I felt like it had been invented for my own particular pleasure. A mixture of mystery and fantasy!!!!

I loved the snarky voice of the heroine, Anita Blake, vampire hunter. I started looking for new UF authors and found them. Nancy Collins and her SUNGLASSES AFTER DARK, Carrie Vaughn and her Kitty Norville books, Jim Butcher and Harry Dresden. When I first ventured into longer fiction after writing short stories for about a decade, I went for urban fiction. All the stories in my L.A. Nocturne world are about vampires and werewolves and the humans they interact with in a paranormal "open" city. I love my paranormal Los Angeles, where the largest vampire in the city has taken over my favorite building in the world, the Griffith Park Observatory.

But then I started venturing out and got sidetracked for a while writing sci fi and paranormal fantasy and sweet romance. I love all those stories, but now I want to go back to UF for a while. I'm going to start with Witch and the Hunter, a story set in the Pacific Northwest, which is aplace I love, particularly in Autumn when everything is ablaze with fall color.

I won't quit writing the other books--I'm releasing short, sweet Christmas romances every single day in December--but it'll be nice to return to my first love. You never forget your first.

Total Fireworks...

I really like writing romances revolving around holidays, but so far I've concentrated on Christmas and Halloween (my two favorites). But I've joined this anthology that'll be out next summer, and I couldn't be more excited. Using my USAT bestselling author pen name Katherine Moore, I'm writing a story that takes place at a small town Fourth of July festival with a city girl and her first love. fireworks ensue, although I write Hallmark-rated hijinks, so it's pretty sweet. (But there are a number of writers in the collection and the stories will come with all the levels of heat.)

You can preorder it here for 99 cents.

USA TODAY Bestseller List is BACK!

I am in a boxed set of mystery stories that was aiming for a list win that got derailed when the paper closed this list down. Now it's back, we're hoping we can still make it. You'll be hearing more from me, but here's a picture of my personal cover:

A Woman Presumed.

I took the title from an NPR story I heard about a double murder where the police found a victim and "a woman presumed to be his wife." And I thought...what if the dead woman wasn't his wife? And what if the person who identified the body knew that? I'm really excited by the story.

Here's the link to pre-order Talk Deadly to Me.

I love the cover for the collection. This collection is close to my heart because I grew up reading mysteries. Yes, Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys, but back then, there was no such thing as YA or Middle Grade reading, so once you were done with those, you pretty much graduated to adult reading. I was reading Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine and my mother read a mystery a night (because she was an insomniac.) I read everybody--Josephine Tey and Sue Grafton and Dick Francis and Agatha Christie (of course) and ... on and on and on.

Follow me on Facebook...

I'm pretty low-key when it comes to pimping out my work. I'll post links if a preorder goes up, or if a friend of mine has a book I think you'll like, but 90 percent of my FB content is interesting stuff. Or things I'm interested in that I think you might be interested in too. But I'm currently trying to get a book deal and one of the metrics the editors are interesed in are HOW MANY FOLLOWERS you have. Which makes it sound like they're only interested in signing cult leaders. But I'd love it if you followed my Kat Parrish page here. Or while you're at it, follow my Kat Parrish Amazon page.

Coming soon--Chimera in Vella

I'm giving Vella another trial after finding this cover (and another) from Chris at Novel Storm on Etsy. (Find it here.)

My story is a future, space opera-ish take on Robert Louis Stevenson's Island of Dr. Moreau. I've been playing with the idea for years!

CHOSEN ...Fight Like a Girl now on pre-order

Stories of bad-ass women (some of them with swords) available on preorder now. I have two stories in this collection. One by my pen name Kat Parrish, one by Katia Kozar. The stories will fit into my Twelve Realms world and be short works of epic fantasy.

Find it here.

Speaking of epic fantasy, I watched Dungeons and Dragons today, which I enjoyed very much. I never played the game, but I know all the tropes and it was to see how the writers handled them Loved the fat dragon. It looked like Hugh Grant was having a great time. Ditto Chris Pines. Not a rod of lordly might in sight and nobody paid for their drinks with coppers!

Seasons of Silver Birch out today and FREE on Kindle

The Christmas Experience was my first novel as a romance writer, and I created the fictional town of Silver Birch, Washington to be its location. At the time I was living in Bellingham, Washington (it's so gorgeous in the fall that it almost looks like it's a fairyland). I took my favorite parts of the city, embellished them, and before I knew it, I'd written a bunch of novellas and short stories based in Silver Birch. So I decided to combine them. The result is more tha 400 pages of cozy romance with all the tropes--second chance, friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, surprise love, holiday romance. The  book is out now and it' free on Kindle.

I had a lot of fun writing the stories. I hope you will enjoy reading them.

Find it here.

Magic on preorder.

This new anthology was a lot of fun. My story, "Dragon Moon," is about what happens when the employees of a bookstore in Toronto are stuck inside at closing time when Dragons suddenly start appearing. It's got all my favorite tropes--enemies to friends, the outsider becoming a hero, working class kids and intellectual dreamers, and lots and lots of books. I think you might enjoy the story, and all the other ones you'll find inside. You can preorder it here

A new series...coming soon

I've lately been wanting to do something that combines historical fiction, spy thiller, and mystery. And as often is the case, I found a series of book covers that inspired me. Set in the WWI era, with a train, a dreadnought and a plane, the particulars of the character and the situations came to life. I'm still researching those. My grandfather served in WWI so it doesn't seem so long ago but more than a century?  All the covers have a similar sepia tone with the ghostly immages of WWI era machines in the background.

But then yesterday I was searching covers on Etsy and ran across a perfect cover by Puzzle Vault ( And it was perfect for updating my character to a new war and a new set of circumstances. It's in color, which helps sell the time shift. It's going to be set in 1937, 20 years after the first book ended. My hero is 50 and tired of "the Great Game." He was always a cynic, but now that cynicism is on the brink of turning dark.
All around him, he sees betrayal. Especially of the men who fought the war and the many who died.
All around him, he sees disruption.
And all around him, he sees despair. For the mistakes after the Armistice have seeded the war that's coming and he fears it will be terrible.
His world has endured the Spanish Flu Epidemic. The Great Depression. The Advent of Talking Pictures. The Communist Revolution.
The world was never simple but now it is more complex than ever.
I am eager to write these books but first I need to clear a bunch of sequels off my plate.

Blue Hearts

I'm starting to see Blue Heart gifs everywhere. i think this is my favorite:

I think symbolism is important. I don't wear t-shirts with slogans. I don't wear buttons or caps with initials on them. But my politics are pretty simple and pretty straightforward. I'm for kindness. I'm for inclusivity. i read banned books. I watch more than one news station.

But wearing our (blue) hearts on our sleeve isn't enough. There is so such going wrong--everything, everywhere, and all at once--that it's really easy to be overwhelmed. And it's not like you can hit pause on your life and devote yourself full time to solving problems. But there are things you can do.

The Bachelor and the Geek...out now from Sofia Aves

His brand of grumpy sunshine clashes with her outer geek...on an international stage.

Silver fox and security firm owner Sirius Weston is the eldest of his band of bachelor brothers and feels some responsibility for his siblings’ security. Intent on leading by example, he lets himself be goaded into joining the cast of a reality TV show in an effort to boost his firm’s reputation and find himself some form of stability as a model for his brothers-in whatever form that might take.

Mousy brainiac Annie Pillingston is nothing like what he imagined, either in his bed or out of it. When he’s partnered with her for the duration of filming reality TV show Geekily Yours, ending in the biggest gala event of the year, he helps the chaotic and shy woman battle catwalks, heels and social awkwardness as she transforms from geek into gorgeous in her own way.

But there’s more fingers in the reality TV pie than either of them expect, from exes and interfering bosses to controlling fathers. Together they navigate the political landscape despite the risk of ruin for his firm’s reputation-and his own-until one secret too many threatens the trust they’ve built together. Though Sirius didn’t want to be on the show in the first place, he no longer wants to go home alone, though he might not have a choice.

Buy here for $2.99. It's the first in a series!

Another short story collection

I turned my focus from short stories to novellas and short novels a few years ago, but over time, I still wrote the odd short story. And this month I realized...I'd written enough for a new collection. So here it is--dark fiction in short bites. Most of the stories were published in short-term anthologies that didn't get much circulation and collections that are now "out of print." The title story is new.

It's available free on KU. You can purchase it here

I am struggling with a story...

I used to write a lot of short stories. Sometimes I was really lucky and they just unspooled like gifts from the universe. Generally,  I have a starting point and an ending point and that's all I need. But I've been struggling with a dark little story since October.  I want to finish it so I can complete a new collection of short stories. It's the title story, so I can't just leave it out.

But I've been thinking about how lucky I am that I can still write. I know a woman, multiple Pushcart Prize nominee, creative writng teacher, would-be novelist. She's younger than I am, somewhere in her early 40s,  I think, although she might be younger. She's got an eye for photography. She can paint. But since contractng long covid, she can't hold a thought in her head.

She's extremely frustrated and has simply quit writing until she has her memory back. And of course, she has that niggling fear--what if I never get it back?

Keep writing until then.

In the meantime, I have to wait until I'm out of Amazon pre-order jail (next month). Once I am, expect to see a lot of books coming up.

This cold, wet winter has been good for hunkering down and writing!

I'm starting to have moments when I grope for words. They always come but what if, one day, the words DON'T come. I banish that thought as soon as it comes into my head because I have no plan B. Writing is it.

Newest Book on my TBR list. She is a Haunting.

One review I read of this literary horror novel is that it had serious Mexican Gothic vibes. And the cover of this book is just as gorgeous.  Check it out here.

Here's an interview with the writer. (I love interviews where writers talk about how they came to write their stories.

The reviews promise a reader will be seriously creeped out, and that the book belongs on a shelf beside Rebecca and The Haunting of Hill House (my favorite horror novel ever. I read it so many times, I can quote the opening and closing pages by memory.)

Here's an excerpt of the first chapter to get you hooked.

Publication Day!! What If?

What if there were no more happy endings?

My story was inspired by Peter Pan and features a fairy, some lost boys, and a wicked Queen holding sway over a kingdom.

Buy your copy here.

Writing the story gave me an idea for a new trilogy of tales that re-imagines characters from classic children's lit in a far more sinister wy. No, I'm not going all agro on Winnie the Pooh, but there are a couple of characters that have always bothered me...I felt like there was a story behind them that we never knew. And Tinkerbelle is one. I've commissioned artist/designer Grady Earls to make the covers and I can't wait to share them with you.

I have two other trilogies planned with his covers and looking at my schedule for the next couple of years, I am going to be busy!!!

re-imagined Fairy Tales

You probably have a favorite fairy tale and if you do, you probably enjoy reading new versions of them. I know I do. This anthology is full of fairy tales with a twist. Some of them are told from the villain's point of view, some of them turn out a little unexpected. My story (written as Katia Kozar) is a retelling of an old tale called "The Fish and the Ring." I set it in the present, and the story features a young working class woman, the wealthy young man who loves her, and his father's attempt to break them up. The title is, "Friday the Special is Fish."

You can preorder Wicked Ever After for 99 cents. Only on Kindle.
