I love urban fantasy and it's getting harder and harder to find something that spins the tropes in a new way. Something like Brotherhood of the Wheel doesn't come along every day. This book, though, the first in a new series, is something different in a good way. The author blends an authentic depiction of Viking civilization with a dark Gothic dream of a supernatural world and the result is fantastastic. Yes, there are werewolves but so much more. (And that "more" includes a heroine is strong and tough and a villain who is as memorable as she is original.) Check it out here.

Heartblaze 2: Vampire Rising by Shay Roberts
This is the second book in Shay Roberts' Heartblaze Trilogy, and unlike some series that seem to go through a "sophomore slump" with sequels, this second outing with heroine Emma Rue is bigger and better and takes the story to a place where the stakes are monumental. (Yes, in this book, we face TEOTWAWKI,)
I read a lot of paranormal romance and urban fantasy and books with vampires and werewolves and witches seems to fall into two categories. There are those that simply mimic what's come before, and give us the same old/same old tropes that make readers want to roll their eyes at the very thought o reading another vampire book. And then there are the paranormal stories that give us something new. The Heartblaze series is in the latter category.
In this story Emma Rue comes to realize that she has a purpose and a destiny far beyond anything that she could have imagined. (Yes, I know, all heroines of paranormal romances are supposed to be special, but here, she really is special.) Just as the Heartblaze world is special. This is a dark fairy tale of a story, and when you learn what the dagger in Emma's hand (see cover) can do, you'll be stunned. Roberts teased it in Heartblaze 1, and he paid it off BIG TIME in this sequel.

Heartblaze 2: Savage Steel by Shay Roberts...a review
If you were worried that author Shay Roberts might have
fallen into a “sophomore slump” with this second book in the Heartblaze trilogy, worry no more. This
book is a delight in every way, with deeper conflicts, richer emotions, and
relationships that are layered and nuanced. He’s even deftly woven in
references to the three novellas set in the Heartblaze
world, a move that makes his fictional universe seem even more complex and
interesting than it already was. As with the first book, the story unfolds in
two different time frames—modern-day Providence and Tudor England—and involves
heroine Emma Rue in a story that has epic consequences. Rowan, the mad witch
behind Emma’s troubles in the first book, returns with an entire coven of
witchly allies, and her tale weaves in and out of Emma’s story like a dark
ribbon. Written in an almost cinematic style full of character cross-cutting
and cliffhangers, this book is a fast read and a deeply satisfying addition to
the series.

A Vampire a Day: HEARTBLAZE by Shay Roberts
I don't know about you, but if I see ONE MORE paranormal book where the heroine is a passive little twit, I'm going to throw up my garlic pizza. HEARTBLAZE is a refreshing change.
Right from the start, author Shay Roberts serves notice that
this is not going to be an ordinary paranormal romance. Yes, there are vampires
and werewolves in the story, but there’s also a richly detailed paranormal
world, where there are rules and reasons for what happens. Then there’s the
setting—Rhode Island, a place steeped in history that comes alive, particularly
in the sections of the book set in Emma’s past life. That past life element is
very appealing, especially since there are “real life characters” woven into
the tale. (Watch for a great bit involving the birth of the national anthem.)
Written in a briskly cinematic style—we’re plunged right
into the action as heroine Emma Rue finds herself acting in inexplicable ways
for reasons she doesn’t understand—and told from multiple points of view across
two timelines, HEARTBLAZE delivers on all levels. There’s a vampire hierarchy,
complicated clan politics among the shifter characters, and a vengeful ghost
who has an agenda related to the larger world. And there’s a romance that’s
deepened not just by conflict, but by intelligence. Emma is not a silly little
girl and her pursuit of the truth about herself, about who she was and who she
is, draws us in. And bonus points for the spooky old mansion! Both Gothic and
contemporary, this book is a treat for readers who are tired of the
same-old/same-old.
